Cerebral Palsy
Cerebral palsy is a medical condition in which a person cannot control the muscles of his body. Shawn's cerebral palsy makes it impossible for him to control any of his muscles, from his toes to his eyes.
The Poem: "Shawn"
Mr. McDaniel wrote a poem called "Shawn" about his relationship with Shawn. Mr. McDaniel later won a Pulitzer Prize for the poem.
Wheelchair
Due to Shawn's inability to control his muscles, he sits in a wheelchair most days.
Mobile
A mobile with zoo animals on it sits above Shawn's crib-like bed.
Kitchen Window
Shawn spends most of his days parked in his wheelchair by the kitchen window. From this position, Shawn can see most of the living room when his eyes chose to focus in that direction.
