Chapter 16 Summary

Mr. McDaniel comes into the room and takes a quilted pillow from Shawn's oversized crib. Mr. McDaniel begins to make a speech he has clearly practiced, telling Shawn how much he loves him, as Shawn remembers the description of how Mr. Detraux killed Colin with a pillow. Mr. McDaniel cries as he tells Shawn how he thinks about him all the time and how he wishes there was a way of knowing if Shawn is aware, if he can think and feel. Mr. McDaniel says that when Shawn was born, he wanted to change places with him, that he begged God over and over, but God never answered. Then Mr. McDaniel confesses that he does not know what to do. Shawn, whose eyes have been shifting all over the room, suddenly focuses on.....
