Chapter 2 Summary

Shawn has cerebral palsy that resulted from a blood vessel that burst inside his brain at birth. This burst blood vessel burst in such a place that Shawn has no control over his muscles at all. Shawn cannot blink on command, cannot focus his eyes with any sort of purpose, cannot move his hands, eat, or go to the bathroom when he wants to. Shawn sits in a wheelchair most of the time, unable to communicate with the people around him. Therefore, no one in Shawn's family knows of the things he knows. Shawn can read, thanks to his sister play-acting "teacher" with him when he was seven. Shawn can listen and learn from the television and radio.
