Summary

Peter, Gamache and Beauvoir fell down the stairs and Clara felt annoyed that she now had to protect them when they were supposed to be saving her. She was relieved to hear the backup police arrive. Later, Clara, Peter, Gamache and Beauvoir sat in Jane’s living room while Oliver, Ruth and Gabri were looking at Jane’s antique furniture upstairs and Myrna cooked in the kitchen. While Clara watched Peter, she realized he may be “beyond repair” (358), that he was hurt more than anyone else and had retreated to his “island” (358). Clara’s friends asked her how she had figured out Ben was the killer. She told them she noticed he was not in the painting. He also did not lock his door after the murder. She described how she had smelt onions in Ben’s house the day after Jane was killed...
