Summary

The detectives went to Matthew Croft’s house in order to look at his hunting equipment and interview his son, Phillipe who was identified by Jane as one of the boys throwing manure. On arriving, they noticed tension in both Matthew and his wife Susan. Susan appeared in the kitchen after being in the basement and Gamache and Beauvoir noticed she was close to breaking point. They attempted to bring out what she was hiding by using an intentional silence, however Nichol sabotaged the moment by breaking it. Gamache wondered why Matthew was tense when he had seemed relaxed at the town meeting. When Beauvoir mentioned they would need to speak to Philippe regarding his involvement in the manure incident, Matthew became enraged.
