Summary

As Vadik checked out his groceries at the store, he thought of the way that none of the items he was buying were choices that he had made. Since Sejun had encouraged him to move to an apartment in Williamsburg, a place she believed she wanted to live with him, he felt that he did not belong there. Vadik thought her decision to move in with him was strange, especially since they seemed to be getting more distant before she made the announcement. She had begged him to come to California to see her. It was during that visit that she told him that she was going to find a job in New York. He had not thought there was anything suspicious about the announcement until he was on his way back home.
