Stargirl Themes
Conformity/Individuality
The most obvious theme is the careful look at conformity and how it limits us, making us latch onto false values and means of evaluating others. We need only look to the personality (or lack thereof) of Wayne Parr. Wayne is gorgeous, but not much more of anything else. He is testimony to the fact that we tend to look at the outside and compare the exterior of people in order to evaluate. More often than not that comparison has to do with some norm, as well as the ability to spend money and adorn oneself with the latest fashion and accessories.
Throughout the novel the author suggests (through the character of Stargirl) that life might be more fun if we could let go of group notions about what is normal, and beautiful and judge for ourselves. The author also is suggesting that we might be of more value to...
