Chapter 1, In Which We Learn of the Village of Wall, and of the Curious Thing That Occurs There Every Nine Years Summary

The novel Stardust by Neil Gaiman is a fanciful tale involving a young man and his heart's desire. Tristran Thorn travels through the wall outside of the village Wall in search of a star to win the hand of his love. Along the way Tristran discovers many things, most importantly that sometimes a person might not know what his true heart's desire really is.

Stardust opens in the village of Wall in the month of April, in the mid 1800's. To the east of Wall is a long rock wall, from which the village had taken its name. Outside the wall is a meadow and a forest, and strange things can sometimes be seen in the woods, but no one from the village goes through the wall except every ninth year on May Day when a fair comes to the meadow.
