Summary

Matty enters Mary Alice’s room, surprising her. She tells him to leave but he begs her to acquire more marijuana for him. Eventually, she agrees. Matty smokes, attempting to travel outside of his body. He is able to drift outside of his body spinning “in the air, panicked, lost in the night sky” (198). Although Frankie is elated that Matty is getting closer, he grows worried that Matty has not been able to figure out the safe’s combination.

When Uncle Buddy asks Matty to get milk from the gas station he is confronted by a man who tells him Destin Smalls would like to speak with him.
