Summary

Chapter 5 - When Bernie gets home, Chee tells her that Darleen has called. He tells Bernie that she sounded upset, but Darleen didn’t tell him why and insisted that she was fine. Chee and Bernie get another call, this time from Louisa. She explains that she had a fight with Leaphorn earlier, but she insists that she would never shoot him. Bernie can tell how concerned she is when she hears more about what happened. Louisa tells them that she left early that morning for a conference she’s attending in Houston. She also mentions that Leaphorn had been obsessing over an old case, but she doesn’t know which one. He had told her that a ghost had come back to haunt him. She leaves her number so Bernie and Chee can reach her if anything changes.
