The flight, despite being twenty-two years long seems like only a week to Ender. Ender spends the time learning how to speak Portuguese. When they arrive near to Lusitania, Jane reveals that Novinha's call for a speaker for the dead has been cancelled. However, two of Novinha's children have called for speakers to speak the death of Libo, who was killed just like his father four years before, and Marcao, Novinha's husband who died only a few weeks before of a genetic disease. These calls for a speaker are Ender's invitation onto the planet despite the fact that Lusitania does not welcome strangers.
