Chapters 13-18 Summary

In Chapter 13, Sophie and Carter go into the club and ask the bartender about Sophie's mother. The man immediately begins suggesting that Sophie join her mother in exotic dance. Carter tries to protect Sophie, but she stands up for herself. Finally they learn where they can find Sophie's mother. Sophie's mother is a drug user and is clearly using something at the moment. Sophie's mother cannot remember how many children she has. Sophie asks for money and her mother hands her three thousand dollars in cash. Sophie and Carter leave a few minute later and Carter drives not to their homes, but to the mines. This makes Sophie cry because of his thoughtfulness.

In Chapter 14, Carter takes Sophie to the mines and just sits with her in an attempt to cheer her up.
