Chapters 1-4 Summary

In Chapter 1, Sophie is late for English, a class she dislikes and is often late for. Sophie sees Carter in the hallway and stops him, flirting with him in an easy, relaxed way. Sophie and Carter have known each other a long time because their houses are next to one another. Under the shallowness of their flirtation Sophie feels the connection that they share only outside the school walls. Sophie is in love with Carter, but he is the last person she will admit this to, afraid of ruining their special connection.

In Chapter 2, Carter walks home behind Sophie as he has always done. They never walk together, but when Sophie is not there he feels abandoned. Sometimes Sophie will drop a note on the sidewalk for Carter. Today the note is covered in smiley faces and tells him to stop...
