Part 2, Chapter 13 Summary
The story returns to the day when Hagar last tried to kill Milkman and Guitar finds her standing there over the couch, still frozen. Seeing her, Guitar finally helps her break out of her trance, at least partially, and he gives her a ride home. On the drive, Guitar realizes that Hagar has been so spoiled by Pilate and Reba that she cannot accept it when someone does not give her what she wants, as Milkman does when he refuses to give her his love.
Once she is home, Hagar sits motionless for three days, unresponsive to anything Pilate and Reba try to do for her. It is only when they show her a mirror that Hagar escapes her trance. However, instead of finding any self-understanding, she looks at herself in the mirror and thinks that Milkman left her because she is not pretty enough. Thus, she decides to make...
