Part 1, Chapter 3 Summary

Milkman begins working for his father in the rental business, mostly acting as a messenger and errand runner around Macon's properties. However, contrary to what Macon had hoped, running errands actually allows Milkman to get away from his father and visit Pilate frequently. Unfortunately, it is not so easy with Guitar and Milkman is only able to see his friend when the two of them skip school together.

As Milkman grows older, he notices that his left leg is a little shorter than his right leg, causing him to walk funny. He manages to hide his slightly shorter leg through several means but he realizes he will never be like his father, who has no such problem. Therefore, since Milkman cannot be like his father, he works hard to be as different.....
