Birthing Unit

The Birthing Unit is where Claire is when the novel opens. It is the building where the birthmothers give birth to the Products, which are the babies born in the community. When Claire's birth does not go as planned, they have to take the baby by Caesarean section.

Fish Hatchery

The Fish Hatchery is where Claire works when she is de-certified as a birthmother. The Fish Hatchery is responsible for fertilizing fish eggs to create the new fish the village needs for food sources and other products. Claire often leaves the Fish Hatchery to go to the Nurturing Center to visit her son.

Law and Justice Building
