Book III Chapters 1 and 2 Summary

Gabe, Gabriel, lives in the Boys' Lodge, which is where orphans live. He knows that Jonas brought him to the village when he was a baby. Gabe possesses a power, which he calls veering. When he notices an old woman who always seems to be watching him and his friends, Gabe thinks about veering to see why she's following them.

Jonas is married to Kira and has children of his own now. Kira brings it to Jonas's attention that Gabe is building a boat. Jonas was once the town leader, but now he is the town librarian. Jonas tells his wife that he is the one who gave Gabe the books and information on how to build a boat. Kira and Jonas also possess special powers.
