Chapters 1-3 Summary
The narrator, who is clearly distraught, explains that she is starting this diary, in the form of a letter, in order to confide in Aissatou, her long time friend. She then informs Aissatou that she lost her husband today.
The narrator has a flashback about what happened earlier.
She receives a phone call, and in a panic, hurries to the hospital only to find her husband Modou dead and "cut off from the world of the living by a white sheet". Mawdo, the doctor (and Modou's friend), tells her that Modou had suffered a heart attack in his office and could not be resuscitated. To the narrator, though, attempts of resuscitation on Modou seemed futile, because she believes there is nothing one can do about fate. After hearing the news, the devastated narrator can barely stand on her legs, yet she tries to remain dignified and listen to grief-stricken Dr....
