Summary

Lily is too relieved when Ellis appears to be upset with his tardiness. As she recounts her meeting with Mr. Lowell, she becomes aware of the risk that she would be taking by sneaking into the orphanage to retrieve Calvin’s file. She offers Ellis an out, which he swiftly declines, and the two chat in a pub while awaiting the cover of dusk.

During their wait outside of the orphanage, Lily informs Ellis that she has been offered a column at the Examiner, but that she will likely turn it down to marry Clayton. After the intimate moment that the two shared following Samuel’s fever, Ellis is clearly shocked that Lily still has an interest in Clayton and that she would be willing to postpone her dream in order to be with him. Tension builds as the two sit in silence...
