Summary

Lily has spent the rest of her afternoon half-heartedly juggling work tasks in between attempts to reach Ellis with the news that Geraldine has appeared at the newspaper in an attempt to track him down. It isn’t until much later that she is able to get a hold of him, and it isn’t until late in the evening that he arrives from New York to see her.

Geraldine reveals that she had been misdiagnosed. While she was in her worst health, Mr. Millstone had arrived to purchase Ruby and Calvin, having seen their picture in the newspaper. Knowing that she was ill and possibly dying, she thought it might be the Lord’s work that he had arrived at that time, so she relinquished them to him. She didn’t notice the money that he had left for her until later...
