Summary

In Chapter 12, Julie takes over Selina's life. She wants to take Dirk into her home and provide for him, sending him to the school where her son and daughter, Eugene and Pauline, attend. Selina thinks about what's best for Dirk but insists that they will return to the farm. Selina tells Julie she doesn't need help and explains about Pervus's recent death. Julie insists on driving Selina and Dirk home with the promise that a servant will drive the wagon out later. She then says her father, Aug Hempel, will be visiting Selina the following day.

Aug arrives and asks Selina if she wants to sell the farm. She says she doesn't. He approves, saying it will be worth more in the future. She says she wants to provide for Dirk to have a good life and Aug says he understands that, but...
