Hiro tells the men that he is on the Raft looking for a piece of ancient software that can be used to manipulate people by tapping into the deep structures of the brain. The en Enki felt that humans were stagnant and generated the Enki nam-shub that essentially reprogrammed the brains of humans. But the deep structures contained a metavirus, one that could not be removed, and the metavirus remained dormant inside humans, like a strain of herpes simplex.
