Summary

In Chapter 1, Richard waits for his fourteen year-old cousin Malley on the beach to watch over sea turtle eggs at night, but she does not show up. Although Malley can be wild, she is always on time. Richard tries to call Malley several times, but she does not pick up. Richard, with an Easton baseball bat for self-defense against egg poachers, settles down near a sea turtle nest. Suddenly, a one-eyed man named Clint Tyree jumps out of the nest, saying he was expecting to confront a poacher named Dodge Olney. He encourages Richard explains he is waiting for his cousin, and asks Clint to keep a lookout for her in case she shows up. Clint agrees, and tells Richard to head home for the night.
