Sizwe tells Buntu that he was arrested in a raid on Zola's home and shows him his passbook. Buntu discovers that Sizwe should have been back in his home community the day before, and comments that he's now in real trouble. Sizwe tells him he doesn't want to go back and wonders about the possibilities for getting a new passbook. Buntu reminds him of the bureaucracy involved in getting a new book. He tells Sizwe to go home and go to work in the mines, but Sizwe tells him he's heard of too many men dying in the mines and says he doesn't want to die, telling Buntu he's got a wife and children.

Buntu becomes calmer, telling Sizwe he's married with a child and sympathizes with his desire to improve himself, but also tells Sizwe of all the trouble he had getting his book and work...
