Summary

In Chapter 33, Mikami found Amamiya’s house empty. He then drove to a nearby diner to pass some time. A waitress took his order. Mikami compared her to the waitress from the day before. His thoughts then turned to Amamiya. Mikami planned to apologize to Amamiya for the police’s errors. He pulled out a writing pad from his bag and wrote a few lines. Mikami drank the rest of his coffee and left, looking for the waitress who was not in sight.

In Chapter 34, Mikami returned to Amamiya’s house. He pressed the buzzer, and Amamiya answered. Mikami noted Amamiya’s appearance, his pale skin, “gaunt” cheeks, and seeming emptiness (240). Mikami apologized for the disturbance and asked Amamiya to hear Mikami’s proposition again. After a substantial pause, Amamiya invited Mikami to come inside. Mikami asked if he could pay his respects...
