Summary

In Chapter 31, Mikami drove to the supermarket where Meiko told him her husband would probably be located. Mikami spotted Kakinuma’s car. Kakinuma was sitting inside, looking straight ahead at the supermarket entrance. Mikami parked his car and walked towards Kakinuma. He knocked on the driver-side window. Kakinuma jumped but let Mikami inside the car once prompted. Mikami climbed into the backseat. He asked Kakinuma what he was doing, assuming it was surveillance work. Not answering Mikami’s question, Kakinuma started the car and asked Mikami what he wanted. He seemed worried about Mikami’s sudden appearance. Mikami asked Kakinuma what he was doing that night 14 years ago when Hiyoshi cried at the Amamiya’s house. Kakinuma pleaded ignorance.

Then Mikami asked Kakinuma if he knew about the Koda memo, and again Mikami received a negative response. Kakinuma asked if they could talk...
