Section 3: Chapter 9-12 Summary

In Chapter 9, there are only two other people in the restaurant as Valerie joins Daniel at a booth. Daniel explains that he is going east to graduate school in three months, having been forced to start from scratch after his divorce. He tells Valerie that his divorce was caused by his wife's infidelity. They talk and flirt comfortably until 4 a.m. When Valerie calls Inda and Inda tells her that Raymond is visiting, Valerie tells her sister to watch her back as she fingers her wedding ring while looking indecisively at Daniel. In Chapter 10, Daniel puts on music as Valerie's eyes explore his nearly empty apartment.
