Summary

In Chapter 5, Jojo resumes the narration. His conflict with his mother heightens as Kayla gets more ill and he realizes that Leonie's remedy for his sister may do more harm than good because Leonie, unlike her parents, "ain't never healed nothing or grown nothing in her life, and she don't know" (107). His realization that "Leonie kill [sic] things" (108) first came to him when he was six. Leonie bought him a betta fish but did not replenish the food Jojo needed to feed the fish; the fish starved to death.
