Summary

In Chapter 3, narration shifts to Jojo's point of view again. Jojo picks up the narration on the morning that he departs for the trip to Parchman in a car with forged insurance papers. Jojo eats a cold breakfast prepared by Pop, dresses himself and puts on an old pair of Michael's sneakers, and packs his belonging in plastic bag. Pop frets about the heavy rain that has begin to fall and reminds Jojo to watch over his family and that he is a man in Pop's eyes. Pop's body language--"Pop with his straight shoulders and his tall back, his pleading eyes"(61)--communicates love to Jojo.

As they start the trip, the rain increases, and Kayla sleeps, having had a sugary drink and Cheetos. It is so hot in the car that Kayla sweats while she sleeps and Misty's already lowcut...
