Summary

The action is continuous.

Mr. and Mrs. Kashikar arrive, with Mrs. Kashikar “unconsciously stroking the garland in her hair” (66). Mr. and Mrs. Kashikar ask Rokde whether he has brought the various props and costume pieces they need. He shows them everything he has brought, and Sukhatme comments that he has brought his own costume. Mrs. Kashikar says she intended to bring a garland for Miss Benare, and Miss Benare teases her about how the garland probably just flew away, commenting that she never likes wearing garlands.

The characters then argue about how to set up the court for that evening’s performance. Sukhatme makes pointed comments about Karnik’s knowledge of “modern theatre” (67), and Karnik comments that there is no difference between modern theatre and traditional theatre.
