Summary

In Chapter 4, named after “A Christmas Carol,” Phuc and Lou played a game while bored in church in the summer of 1981. Afterward, their father was angry at them. He stopped himself from spanking them, but abandoned Phuc in the middle of the car ride home. Phuc walked all alone on the side of the road, reflecting on his relationship with his father. After a while, his mother had convinced his father to drive back and pick him up. Later that year, Phuc watched the film, “A Christmas Carol.” The ghosts in the movie scared his cousin and his mother made him turn it off. On Christmas Eve, Phuc’s family visited Ong Ba Ngoai’s apartment. Phuc and Lou played a game with their great-grandmother Ba Co, in which she pretended to be a witch.
