Summary

In Chapter 2, named after “Crime and Punishment,” Phuc watched his grandmother Ba Ngoai yell at his 10-year-old uncle Thai, whose nose was bleeding, for losing his bike. Thai explained that some kids had beaten him up and stolen the bike. Ba Ngoai slapped him. Later, Phuc saw that Thai and his brothers had stolen the bike back. At home, Phuc continued to pinch Lou after his mother told him to stop. She whacked him with a rolled up magazine. When she realized that she had cut him, she apologized and helped him clean up. In 1980, Phuc went to the grocery store with Ba Ngoai. He wanted a pack of Star Wars trading cards for 25 cents, but she said they could not afford it. He stole the cards and a pack of gum.
