Summary

Chapter 13

John arrives to pick up Sia. She wants to seek out Carol; but, she discovers that John has instructions not to allow her to go anywhere where homeless people might be. Sia is angry to discover that she has been part of such a cruel, self-centered group. She's now angry at the limitations placed by her parents. She arrives home and offers to help Beatriz with the evening meal. She has to insist before Beatriz gives in. Sia finds herself calming as she chops vegetables and talks about Beatriz and Beatriz's life and family.

They hear a crash, and Beatriz rushes toward the living room. Sia pushes past her to find her mother, too drunk to stand. She rants, gushes about how much she loves Sia, apologizes for being a poor mother, sobs because they are about to lose everything, and berates...
