Summary

In Chapter 1, New York Times Reporter, Jodi Kantor first began investigating Harvey Weinstein in 2017 after reading actress Rose McGowan's twitter feed, accusing a producer of raping her. Though rumors about Weinstein's mistreatment of women had been circulating for years, no one wanted to speak up and accuse him directly. Even McGowan declined cooperating with the paper. After telling McGowan about her past work writing about women's experiences in the workplace, her success in winning women their rights particularly in corporate settings, McGowan agreed to talk.

On the phone, McGowan described her first interactions with Weinstein at the Sundance Film Festival in 1997. He later pressured McGowan into his room, forcibly stripped and raped her. When McGowan complained, Weinstein's people paid her $100,000 to stay silent, records of which she was never given.
