1930s: Adolf Hitler's persecution of the Jews in Germany begins in 1933. Discrimination gives way to the loss of all their rights as citizens. In 1938, the Nazis destroy the country's syna­gogues and begin imprisoning Jews and others in concentration camps, like the one depicted in "The Shawl."
