Summary

In Chapter 12, "Kaui, 2008, Indian Creek," Kaui and her friends continued obsessively climbing. On their climbing trips, Kaui and Van shared a tent. Van would tease Kaui for doing hula in her sleep. One night they had sex.

In Chapter 13, "Nainoa, 2008, Portland," after his failure to save the mother and baby, Noa retreated into himself. He took a leave of absence he could not return from. He could not sleep. He stole a receiver from work and listened to calls, hoping someone else would mess up as badly as he had. One night Khadeja visited, shocked by his ailing appearance. She begged him to get help. Noa became aggressive, there was nothing anyone could do. The only way he felt better was playing the ukulele. The songs reminded him of childhood. One night his playing made him think the sharks were calling him home...
