Jane overhears her classmates' "Whispers" about her shark attack and amputation. Her classmates stare at her arm as Angie and Trina comment on Jane's new haircut in "I Could Run Away, But Then What?", and she moves her shoulder out of sight in "Shark Girl" as two girls stare and whisper. Jane feels that being in "Art Class" is "like showing a dead person her lost life, and all she missed. It's cruel" (page 159).
