Chapter Five Summary

After days of seeing the pony tailed stranger everywhere, the man seems to vanish. Out of boredom, Lily attends the meeting at the Golgotha Church. Most present are black, but Lily sees Mookie Preston as well as Claude and Sheriff Marty Schuster with the minister. The meeting is unorganized with several speaking including Lanette Glass. Lanette states that her son is dead, and his death most likely lead to the death of Len Elgin and maybe Del Packard. Lanette also asks Claude and the sheriff about the rumors that an armed white militia is active in Shakespeare. Lily wonders about this news.

The meeting runs late and as they exit the building Lanette thanks Lily for helping her son. Lily states that she was simply doing what was right. As the crowd moves an explosion rocks the building. Dazed, Lily struggles...
