Chapter Four Summary

Lily heads to the Shakespeare Clinic where she cleans for Carrie Thrush, the town doctor. The two women share the gossip of the week and Lily tells Carrie about Claude. Carrie wonders if Lily can maintain her friendship with Claude if a lawsuit is brought against the police department. Lily barely comments and Carrie remarks that being Lily's confidant is tricky when she does not speak. Lily answers that after she was raped she had learned to be cautious since the people she trusted had taken her confidences to the press.

Lily moves onto the apartment of Marie Hofstettler, one of her favorite people. Distressingly, Marie is dying and begs Lily not to call for help. Torn, Lily sits with her until the end is near and then calls Carrie, telling her that Marie would like to die at home. Carrie...
