Chapter 6 Summary

Gwen sees an ad in the paper for dancers wanted at Underhill. She dresses and intends to apply for the job. She wears her black hair down, spiderweb black stockings, long false eyelashes, bright red lipstick, and thigh high black boots. Even though she's nearly forty, she looks to be about fifteen years old in the outfit. Downstairs she runs into Sylvia, her landlady. Sylvia shares with Gwen that she used to do business with the owner of Underhill. Gwen is shocked. She also tells Gwen that she needs to apply makeup to the covered parts of her body if she wants to land the job. She implies that Gwen's breasts are small and need a little of the same bright red lipstick.

Gwen goes back upstairs to retrieve her lipstick when Stephen Weiss.....
