Carrie

Carrie is introduced in the beginning of the book as the narrator’s friend. At first, she plays a minor role in the plotline but as the chapters progress, she takes a more prominent position and eventually the narrative focusses almost exclusively on her. She is 34 years old, repeatedly described as beautiful, and is tan, slim, and blond. Like the narrator, Carrie dresses fashionably, works as a journalist that covers topics like sexuality and dating, and regularly attends parties and social engagements among the elite in Manhattan. We gradually get to know her backstory, and we find out that Carrie grew up in Connecticut, went to Nayaug High School, and never went to the movies because she had a “WASPy mother” that told her that only poor people send their sick kids to the movies (43).
