Chapter 12 Summary

The boys respond to the accident with uncommon presence of mind. As they wait for one of their number to retrieve Dr. Stanpole, they fetch the nearby wrestling coach to give Finny first aid. Even Phineas himself is calm and collected, waiting patiently to be tended. Dr. Stanpole arrives and orders Phineas lifted onto a chair for transport. As Phineas is carried away astride the chair, the sight strikes Gene. He who has carried so many, now is himself carried. It occurs to Gene that Finny never minded Gene's assistance, because Phineas thought of him as being an extension of himself. Dr. Stanpole explains to Gene that Finny has broken his leg again, but that this time it is a much cleaner break.

Disobeying the headmaster's order that he return to the dormitory, Gene.....
