Realizing that Leper is referring to his home in Vermont, Gene arrives there the next morning. He takes a train, transfers to a bus and finally finishes the last leg on foot. During the trip, Gene grapples with the idea of Leper's desertion, finally deciding that it isn't possible. He concludes that "escaped" must mean that Leper has escaped from the enemy, perhaps spies.
