Gene half believes Finny's idea of a world without war, in part because of the peace that he feels, as he trains under Finny's tutelage. This peace remains unshaken even after Leper Lepellier is inspired to enlist after watching a military recruitment film about ski troops. The uncharacteristic act is so unlike Leper that it only serves to make the war seem all the more unreal. At first the students of Devon don't know what to make of Leper's departure, but Brinker soon starts a trend of jokes wherein Leper is credited with every reported allied victory, giving his classmates a humorous way of engaging the fact of his absence as well as the reality of the war.
