Phineas deplores Genes choice of clothing. Gene explains that he's been out shoveling snow off the railroad, which makes sense to Finny since that's something that they would typically do at the beginning of the winter session. Phineas shares his disbelief at the lack of maid service. Gene replies that it's a small sacrifice for the sake of the war. As Gene makes up Finny's bed, he notes that Phineas isn't the slightest bit uncomfortable with the idea of accepting help from him. Gene marvels at the irrepressible attitude with which Finny greets each new day, never allowing his hardships to weigh him down.
Brinker shows up the following morning to ask Gene if he's ready to enlist. Seeing Phineas, he starts to make a wisecrack about how Gene's plot has gone awry. No.....
