Gene takes a shower to wash himself clean of the sticky salt of the Naguamsett river. After, just as Gene begins to contemplate the question of sports, Brinker visits from across the hall. Brinker expresses his admiration for the influence it must have taken for Gene to have gotten a room all to himself, insisting that Gene must have chosen Finny for a roommate knowing that he wouldn't be returning this Fall, that indeed he fixed the whole thing. Gene, his discomfort now obvious, suggests that they go down to the "butt room" to have a smoke. Brinker agrees.
Down in the butt room, Brinker introduces Gene to other boys as a "prisoner," charged with "doing away with his roommate so he could have the whole room to himself." Gene, becoming increasingly nervous, tries.....
