The first chapel service of the Fall session, seven hundred students strong, convenes. Gene notes that the laxity of Summer is gone, Devon once again steeped in discipline. A keynote is delivered. Hymns are played. Sermons are given. Gene is assigned the same room that he and Finny shared over the summer, a room that he has all to himself due to Finny's absence. Across the hall, Brinker Hadley, a shrewd, by-the-book student politician, now occupies Leper's old room. Gene briefly considers visiting Brinker, but finds that he'd rather not see Leper's whimsy replaced by Brinker's orderliness.
Hurrying to keep an appointment at the Crew House, Gene pauses near the river junction to remember the way Phineas would always try to balance himself one-legged on the prow of a canoe, only to inevitably wind.....
