Finny is bedridden, one of his legs shattered by the fall. Finny's accident is the talk of the school, but no one suspects that Gene is responsible. Gene spends most of his time alone in quiet self-contemplation. One evening Gene dresses himself in Finny's clothes, including the garish pink shirt. Seeing himself in the mirror, he is relieved to find that he is the very image of Phineas himself and it seems to Gene that he "will never stumble through the confusions of [his] own character again." The illusion stays with him throughout the night, but is gone by morning, when Gene is again confronted with the reality of what he did to Phineas.
