Chapter 3 Summary

Gene concludes that he doesn't owe Phineas any thanks since he wouldn't have been up in the tree in the first place were it not for Finny's influence. Finny begins recruiting members for the Super Suicide Society of the Summer Session, also creating from thin air a set of governing rules, including a rule which states that he and Gene, as Charter Members, would open each meeting by jumping from the tree. Gene, who never inured himself to jumping from the branch, hates the rule, but nevertheless complies for fear of losing face with Phineas.

Phineas, who holds both sports and athleticism in high regard, is appalled by badminton's inclusion as part of the summer athletics program. As an alternative he invents an impromptu game called "blitzball," which involves one player running around with.....
