Summary

Bridget reflects on the trip to Boston her last attempt to leave the Borden’s employment brought about at the beginning of chapter 14, on the morning of August 4th. The trip was Mrs. Borden’s way of forcing her to stay. As Bridget pulls herself from the memory, she promises that she will get her money back today. She goes to prepare breakfast and her preparations are interrupted by Mrs. Borden instructing her to get John.

After breakfast, Bridget washes dishes until she hears Lizzie scream at discovering her dead birds. Bridget then goes outside to wash windows despite the heat and her food poisoning from the mutton stew. While she cleans, she talks to her friend Mary about Mrs. Borden stealing her money. When the conversation ends, Bridget returns to washing windows as Mrs. Borden watches from inside. Bridget, offended by Mrs. Borden...
